Yard Hand / Forklift Operator

Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled and reliable Yard Hand / Forklift Driver to join our team. The primary responsibilities of this role are to assist with the pulling and loading of material for deliveries, unloading incoming material, and organization and maintenance of the yard area while operating a forklift to move materials and products safely and efficiently. The ideal candidate will have experience operating forklifts and possess a strong commitment to hard work, safety, thoroughness/attention to detail, and teamwork.  

Responsibilities

  • Pull and bundle material packs for deliveries.
  • Operate a forklift to safely and efficiently move materials and products around the yard.
  • Load trucks and trailers by hand or by forklift in a timely manner, ensuring accuracy and adherence to loading specifications.
  • Load material for walk-in customers.
  • Unload incoming delivery trucks and trailers and inventory new stock.
  • Unload returned stock material, and put it away in correct areas. Create and turn in lists of returned stock material to inventory adjuster. 
  • Communicate with supervisor when supplies and stock material are low and need to be ordered. 
  • Assist with the organization and maintenance of the yard area, including organizing materials, cutting down posts and boards for various purposes, doing repairs and small handy man tasks as needed, cleaning, sweeping, etc.  
  • Conduct routine inspections of the forklift to ensure it is in proper working condition, reporting any maintenance or repair needs to management.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures while operating the forklift and working in the yard area.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors to coordinate tasks and ensure efficient workflow.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned, making small deliveries with pick up and trailer as needed, assisting with inventory management and assisting other departments as needed.  

Requirements

  • Ability to safely lift heavy objects weighing up to 80 lbs. (bags of concrete off pallets, for example).
  • Work in outdoor environments in various weather conditions and temperatures.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions accurately.
  • Flexibility to work overtime as needed.
  • A teachable spirit; a willingness to learn and work collaboratively within a team structure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Proven experience operating a forklift, working in a yard or construction environment.
  • Strong understanding of safety procedures and protocols related to forklift operation.
  • Experience with inventory management systems.
  • Knowledge of basic maintenance and repair tasks for forklifts.
  • Experience operating other types of heavy machinery.
  • Experience/Skills in product organization.
